Title: Almost 9 months post Microfracture surgery
Post by: catincleve on October 10, 2011, 07:33:40 PM
I'm a 49 y/o female who experienced a fall that resulted in a severe ankle sprain and what was (at first) diagnosed as an 'avulsion fracture' of the medial talus. What looked like an avulsion fracture later turned out to be an OCD as it moved out of it's place, causing plenty of pain and catching sensation. OS recommended arthroscopic microfracture and was actually surprised to remove an 18mm length, 10mm width and 5mm height fragment (yes, I have the souvenier). Most recent xray was a month ago and he said the defect looked as if it was filling in nicely, no arthritis or bone spurs... However, it is hurting and feeling as if it's locking up or catching again these past 2 weeks, complete with popping noise et al. Any one have this experience this many months later, or any idea as to what or why this would be happening? Thank you for any input!

No replies? Is this that unusual or has no one experienced?

I had surgery in April where "dead bone" was removed from my Talus.  Also, my doc did a bone graft from my lower tibia to promote  bone growth.  After 8 wks walking with crutches, using a bone growth stimulator, and a month of physical therapy, I am still experiencing pain and fatigue.  I'm 59, and the doc told me it could be a full year for the pain to totally subside.  I'm not really very optimistic, and am resigning myself to the possibility that this is the best it's going to be.

hey catincleve, the "catching and locking" feeling is not uncommon for OCD sufferers. 2 weeks post-surgery there are often lots of complications such as these. It's simply too early to tell how your ankle will turn out.

Frankly, OCD is a serious injury and MF , especially in someone of your age, and taking out such a large piece of bone.. I would expect complications such as these. I had my MF surgery at 24 and i experienced the popping and locking and various pain for up to 6 months to a year. Heck I still get pains, sometimes severe, at certain times.

Thanks for the replies. It's been over 9 months since the MF surgery, and I suppose it's still too soon to tell just how successful it will turn out. I realize I'm not a 'youngster' anymore, but since I've never broken anything before and I'm not suffering any other degenerative disease type issues... I have been curious and concerned about why the pain and locking sensation continues to plague me!

I did not have a bone fragment removed, but I had MF and did not feel better at 4 months post op. At that point my doctor said that he thought it would not get any better. I had another surgery at that point, it was graft called Denovo by Zimmer. I am 4.5 months post op from that and having no pain. I was told the reason the MF did not work was, the surgery did not succeed in creating a smooth surface on the talus bone. I was having pain all the time with a catching sensation before the second surgery. By the time they did the second surgery my OCD was 18mm by 8mm. I am glad I got the second surgery, and I would do it again. It was quite hard to go through but it was worth it. I hope you feel better.

I'm 7 months post MF on my right ankle. I've started to get an occasional catch and painful pop around the outside ankle bone. It started around 2 months and my PT said it could just be inflamed tendons. My doc didn't really say much but now that it's been 5 months more and it's still bad I may try him again. Before the surgery the catch and pop pain was more in the middle of my ankle so this isn't the same thing but it still is very painful.  I don't know if this means the MF failed or if it's just a side effect that I'll have to live with. Is yours anything similar to how mine sounds?
